Overview

What is Large Format Printing?

Large format printing produces oversized graphics for outdoor and indoor display, from flex banners and vinyl to backlit signages and building hoardings. Using wide-format presses and durable, weather-resistant media, it turns walls, facades and event spaces into high-impact visual real estate that reaches audiences at scale.

From retail storefronts and exhibition stalls to roll-up standees and event backdrops, large format work bridges branding and physical space. Modern UV and eco-solvent inks deliver vivid, fade-resistant colour on virtually any substrate, so a single artwork reproduces crisply from a table-top standee to a multi-storey building wrap.

Media selector

Match the media to the viewing distance

Large format is specified by viewing distance, not absolute dpi — a hoarding read at 50 m can be output at 30 dpi and still look crisp. Pick media by where the graphic lives and how far away the viewer stands.

MediaWeightUse
PVC flex300–340 gsmHoardings and long-distance outdoor viewing
Star flexStandees and exhibition graphics, viewed 10–15 ft
Backlit flex440 gsm (light) / 510 gsm (premium)Lightboxes with 25–35% light transmittance
Vinyl (adhesive)Wall graphics, vehicle wraps, floor decals
MeshBuilding wraps that let wind pass through; low windload

How to spec dpi for wide-format

Six standing rules for setting up files that RIP cleanly at any scale.

150 dpi
Minimum for close-view large-format output at final size
300 dpi
Standees, exhibition panels and any surface viewed under 5 ft
600 dpi
Fine detail on UV full-colour flatbed output
Viewing distance rule
Large format is specified by distance, not absolute dpi; hoardings tolerate lower dpi than standees
Scale table
Artwork often supplied at 10% with proportional bleed and colour bars, then scaled at RIP
Colour proofing
Take a small-format contract proof from the same RIP profile as the final press to sign off colour
Before you send artwork

Wide-format artwork checklist

Seven items that get flagged most often on wide-format work — clearing them saves a full RIP cycle.

Set up at 10% scale with proportional 25 mm bleed
CMYK working space, colour-managed with the target ICC profile
150 dpi at final size (or 300 dpi at 50% → equivalent 150 dpi at 100%)
Vector for typography, logos and hard-edged shapes wherever possible
Colour bars and grommet/eyelet markers included on a separate layer
Windload and mounting method noted — hoarding vs mesh vs backlit each has a different bleed and finishing spec
For backlit, avoid pure blacks in illuminated areas — flatten to 90% K for even lightbox glow
